Ko Phi Phi

Ko Phi Phi (หมู่เกาะพีพี) is a small archipelago in Krabi Province.

The named islands are:

* Ko Phi Phi Don, the largest and only populated island.

* Ko Phi Phi Leh (also known as Ko Phi Phi Lai), a smaller island to the south, popularised when parts of the movie "The Beach" were filmed there. Uninhabited apart from bird nest harvesters and a few Maya Bay wardens; expect plenty of tourists during daylight hours, especially in Maya Bay, the beach of the eponymous movie.

* Ko Phai ('Bamboo Island'), a small low-lying islet to the north of Phi Phi Don with several good beaches.
* Ko Yung (Yung Island) is north of Ko Phi Phi Don. The island has a stone beach in the east and small sandy beaches at the foot of the hills. It is teeming with various kinds of colourful coral reefs.
* Bida Nok and Bida Nai, two small adjacent limestone karsts to the south of Phi Phi Leh, with near-vertical cliff walls rising from the sea.

Although rapidly becoming less and less attractive due to the masses of tourists as well as the construction on the island, it's still a very beautiful place to visit, and is one of those places everybody should go at least once in their lifetime. Although the beaches are not the best in Thailand, the place has a good vibe and nightlife and there are dozens of dive shops to choose from.

Most of the (over)development of Phi Phi Don is situated in or around Tonsai village, which is on the low, sandy isthmus that joins the two hilly spurs that comprise the rest of the island. There are also other, quieter resorts on Long Beach, Laem Thong, and at other less accessible areas of the island.

Ko Phi Phi was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, when nearly all of the island's infrastructure was wiped out. Redevelopment has, however, been swift, and services like electricity, water, Internet access and ATMs are up and running again, but waste handling has been slower to come back online.

It should be noted that, while very laid back, many of the local islanders are Muslim. You will lose considerable respect if you walk around town in your skimpies (this applies to Buddhist areas of Thailand too!). While many tourists do in fact parade down Main Street in their Speedos or thong bikinis, to avoid offending your hosts, it's usually best just to throw on a pair of shorts or a sarong; similarly, topless on the beaches, while grudgingly tolerated by most locals, is also probably best avoided.

Koh Tao (Island in Thailand)

Koh Tao translates as “Turtle Island”, so named because of it’s shape and also there were many of turtles living around.

It’s only about 21 sq km and is remotely located about 70 km far from the mainland.

From 1933 to 1947 Koh Tao was used to jail political prisoners of the Bowaradech Uprising. Many were transferred from Koh Tarutao to Koh Tao by reason of its location lonely in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand.

The community in Koh Tao was settled at the first time when the villagers from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan immigrated and were on the land of Koh Tao in 1947. Before that there were some people who came and used the land for coconut plantation and small fishery.

How to get here

The trip from Bangkok to Koh Tao consists of two part traveling: from Bangkok to Chumphon and from the pier at Chumphon to Koh Tao by boat. And for the tourists who want to visit Koh Samui and Koh Phagnan at the first, you can take a boat from Suratthani instead of Chumphon.

The most popular journey to get here from Bangkok – Chumphon - Koh Tao is to use the bus/boat combination trip where the tickets are available from many travel agencies on Thanon Khao San.

Ko Maak

Koh Maak island is a beautiful and mostly quiet family island, which is quite a bit more civilized than most of it's neighbors.
On Ko Mak electricity is available 24 hours per day, whereas many of the resorts and hotels on Koh Wai, Koh Kradat, Koh Kam and even Koh Kood run their own generators only during the hours of the night, which makes basic comforts like a TV and refrigerator nearly impossible to have.
In the Makathanee Koh Mak all of the rooms, bungalows and suites have air conditioning, a refrigerator / minibar, a TV, hot water shower, personal safe and coffee and tea making facilities. There is an internet cafe in the reception area and motorcycles or cars can be rented from the service desk in the same room.
You can also use the chauffeur driven Makathanee Minibus to be dropped off and / or picked up from anywhere on Ko Maak. For less local transfers (to other islands), trips to Cambodia, snorkeling or diving trips and courses, or other things to see and do, please visit the information center near the road entrance of the beach resort. Turn right onto the small main road to find a series of small restaurants and pubs that provide nearly all of the nightlife that you will find on this peaceful island. The best fresh seafood Beach BBQ, however, stands right next to our famous restaurant, on our own beach. Be sure to arrive early for the best pickings.
Because the owners of this Koh Mak resort and their families have been living on this beautiful island for literally centuries, they have a very strong bond with Mak island and it's nature which is still mostly in tact. Knowing this, we hope that you won't mind if we ask you to limit the use of the shower heater and air conditioner as much as possible, so that both future visitors as well as the next generation of Koh Makians will be able to enjoy Koh Mak island, it endless pristine beaches and it's crystal clear sea water with abounded sea life, as much as we trust you will.
